New locks, fitted properly. Anti-snap cylinders as standard. No hidden costs.
Some UPVC locks can be repaired. But some can’t. When a cylinder has snapped, a mechanism has seized, or your lock is simply out of date, a repair won’t last. So I fit a proper replacement instead.
I’m Manuel, a DBS-checked, fully insured locksmith with 12+ years of experience. I fit new UPVC door locks across Staines-upon-Thames, Surrey, Middlesex, Berkshire and West London — usually in one visit, with an anti-snap rated cylinder fitted as standard.
If you’re not sure whether your door needs a repair or a full replacement, my UPVC Door Repairs page covers that in more detail. This page is for when you already know it’s time for

Non-destructive repair approach
A few clear signs tell me a lock needs replacing rather than fixing:
The cylinder has snapped, either from wear or a break-in attempt
The mechanism is seized, rusted, or badly worn
You’ve moved house and don’t know who holds a key
Your current lock isn’t anti-snap rated
A repair has already been tried, and the fault has come back
If none of these sound right, it’s worth calling me anyway. I’ll check the lock on-site and give you an honest answer — repair or replace — before any work starts.
A UPVC door lock is made up of three main parts, and any one of them can be the reason you need a replacement.
Knowing which part has failed changes the job. A cylinder swap takes minutes. A full mechanism replacement takes longer. I check both before quoting, so you only pay for what you actually need.
Basic tools can snap standard euro cylinders in under a minute. Burglars use this method more than almost any other to force open uPVC and composite doors across the UK. Because of this, I fit anti-snap rated cylinders on every replacement I carry out — not as an upgrade you have to ask for, but as the standard.
Anti-snap cylinders break in a different way. If someone tries to snap them, the cylinder still resists turning, so the door stays locked. Many home insurers now expect this level of security anyway, particularly on ground-floor and rear doors.
If your current lock isn’t anti-snap rated, replacing it is one of the simplest security upgrades you can make to your home.
Not every uPVC door uses the same hardware, so the job can look a little different depending on the door type.
Front doors usually take a standard cylinder or full mechanism swap.
French doors have a “master” door with the main lock, and shootbolts secure a second door. I often need to check both, even if only one side feels faulty.
Patio doors use track-mounted locking hardware rather than a standard mechanism, so I bring different parts for these.
Whatever type of door you have, mention it when you call, so I arrive with the right parts.
Here’s a simple breakdown of the three most common jobs, so you know roughly what to expect before I arrive.
| Job | What it involves | Typical time on-site |
| Euro cylinder replacement | Swap the old cylinder for a new anti-snap rated one | 5–10 minutes |
| Full mechanism replacement | Remove and refit the entire locking mechanism | 30–60 minutes |
| Handle and lock set replacement | Replace the handle and mechanism together | 30–45 minutes |
Most jobs are a straightforward cylinder swap. Full mechanism replacement is only needed when the gearbox or locking points inside the door have failed completely.
I keep the process simple, so there’s nothing to worry about on the day.
Cylinder swaps cost less than a full mechanism replacement, simply because there’s less involved. Even so, I always confirm the exact price with you before I start any work — never after.

How do I know if I need a repair or a replacement?
If the cylinder has snapped, the mechanism has seized, or you want a better-rated lock, replacement is usually right. If you’re not sure, call me, and I’ll check it for free.
What is an anti-snap cylinder?
It resists lock-snapping, one of the most common ways burglars force open uPVC doors. I fit these as standard on every job.
How long does a replacement take?
A cylinder swap takes five to ten minutes. A full mechanism replacement usually takes under an hour.
Will a new lock fit my door?
Yes. I measure your door on-site so I match the new part correctly, rather than guessing in advance.
Do you carry parts with you?
Yes. I carry anti-snap cylinders, mechanisms and handles for the common uPVC brands in the area, so I finish most jobs in one visit.
Does anti-snap replacement help with insurance?
Often, yes. Many insurers expect anti-snap cylinders on ground-floor and rear doors. It’s worth checking your policy to be sure.
How much does it cost?
It depends on whether you need a cylinder swap or a full mechanism. See the pricing section above, or call for an exact quote.
Can you replace locks on French or patio doors?
Yes. The parts and process differ slightly, so mention the door type when you call.
What if a break-in damaged my lock?
Burglary Repair covers that. I can secure the door and fit a permanent replacement in the same visit.
