What to Do Right Now After a Break-In(Immediate Steps)

Take these steps in order. They protect you, and they make any insurance claim easier.

1. Check You’re Safe

If you think someone may still be inside, don’t go in. Leave and call 999. Otherwise, stay calm and move on to the next step.

2. Call 101 and Get a Crime Reference Number

Report the break-in to your local police force and ask for a crime reference number. Your insurer will usually ask for it. The police may also want to see the damage before anything is changed.

3. Photograph Everything

Once the police say it’s fine, take clear photos of the damage. Include the door, frame, lock and any forced areas—insurers like clear evidence.

4. Call Manuel

Call or WhatsApp me on 073 9999 2424. Please don’t try to repair a forced door yourself. A damaged door can be unstable, and a rushed fix often leaves it less secure than before.

Burglary Repairs: What Happens on the Visit

I keep every visit clear and calm, so you always know what’s happening and what it will cost.

Every External Door Assessed

I check the door that was forced, and every other external door too. Break-in damage isn’t always obvious. A door that looks fine can still have a weakened lock.

Compromised Locks Replaced

Any lock that was forced, snapped or tampered with gets replaced. I also replace locks where keys may have been taken, since you can’t be sure who has a copy. I carry parts for the common UPVC brands found locally, so most jobs finish in one visit.

Frame, Keep and Alignment Checked

A forced door can twist or drop in its frame. Even a small shift stops the mechanism from lining up. So I check the frame and keep, and adjust the door until it closes and locks smoothly.

What I Repair and Replace

Locks and cylinders

I replace any lock that thieves forced, snapped or drilled. I also replace locks if thieves may have taken your keys.

Multipoint mechanisms

I repair or replace damaged mechanisms in UPVC and composite doors. Since I carry common local parts, I usually finish in one visit.

Door and frame alignment

A forced door often twists in its frame. Therefore, I adjust it until it shuts and locks smoothly.

Handles, keeps and strike plates

I replace bent or cracked hardware, so your door closes and secures properly.

Rear, side and patio doors

These are often targeted first because they’re out of sight. I check and repair them just like the front door.

Temporary securing

If I can’t finish on the day, I’ll secure your property meanwhile. I never leave you with a door that doesn’t lock.

Burglary Repairs and Your Insurance Claim

Before I leave, I give you a clear, itemised invoice that lists the work and parts. Then you can send it to your insurer with your crime reference number.

If I can’t complete a full repair on the day, I’ll tell you plainly. Meanwhile, I’ll make your property as secure as I can, so you never end up with a door that doesn’t lock.

Why I Fit Anti-Snap Cylinders After Every Break-In

Thieves commonly snap the locks on UPVC and composite doors. In fact, they can snap a standard cylinder in seconds with basic tools, and the door opens easily afterwards.

An anti-snap-rated cylinder resists this attack. Thieves may still attack the cylinder, but the door stays locked. Because someone has already targeted your home, fitting one straight away is the most useful upgrade you can make.

For that reason, I fit anti-snap-rated cylinders as standard on every replacement. For more on the jobs involved, see my UPVC Door Lock Replacement page

Making Your Home Harder to Break Into Again

Burglars sometimes return to homes they already know are easy to enter. Therefore, a few sensible upgrades can give you real peace of mind.

After I finish a repair, I can check your other doors and locks and tell you plainly where the weak points are. Common improvements include:

  • Fitting anti-snap-rated cylinders on every external door
  • Replacing worn or outdated multipoint mechanisms
  • Fixing doors that don’t close or lock smoothly
  • Upgrading rear and side doors, since thieves often target these first

You don’t have to do everything at once. Instead, I’ll explain what matters most, and you decide what fits your budget.

How Much Do Burglary Repairs Cost?

The cost depends on the damage. For example, a cylinder swap costs less than a full mechanism replacement, and door adjustments usually take little time. Even so, I always confirm the price before I start, so you get no surprises.

Typical jobs include:

  • Anti-snap cylinder replacement
  • Multipoint mechanism repair or replacement
  • Handle and lock replacement
  • Door adjustment and alignment

Burglary Repairs: Your Questions Answered

Immediate Response

My property has been broken into. What do I do first?
First, make sure you’re safe. If someone may still be inside, leave and call 999. Otherwise, call 101 for a crime reference number, then call me.

Can you secure my property tonight?
In most cases, yes. During the same visit, I’ll make your property as secure as I can.

Do I need a crime reference number before you attend?
No, you can call me straight away. However, if the police want to examine the damage, wait for them first. Later, the reference number will help you with your insurer.

How quickly can you get to me?
I reach most Staines-upon-Thames addresses within 20-30 minutes. Meanwhile, surrounding towns usually take 30-45 minutes.

Security and Locks

Which locks do you replace after a break-in?
I replace any lock that thieves forced, snapped or tampered with, and any lock where thieves may have taken the keys. In addition, I fit anti-snap-rated cylinders as standard.

The burglar came through the back door. Do you only fix that one?
No. I check every external door, because thieves may have weakened other locks too.

My door frame has been damaged. Can you repair it?
Yes, I can adjust the door, keep and alignment, and I can repair minor frame damage. However, if the frame or door needs replacing, I’ll tell you honestly and explain your options.

Will the new locks meet my insurer’s requirements?
That depends on your policy. First, ask your insurer for the exact standard in writing. Then call me, and I’ll tell you what I can do to meet it.

Insurance and Documentation

Do you provide paperwork for my insurer?
Yes. I give you a clear, itemised invoice that describes the work and parts.

My insurer says I need to upgrade my locks. Will your work satisfy this?
It often can. Since every insurer words this differently, check their exact requirement first. Then I can advise you on what to fit.

Can I claim the locksmith’s cost on my insurance?
Many home policies cover emergency repairs after a break-in, but it depends on yours. Because I can’t advise you on your cover, keep your invoice and crime reference number together, and ask your insurer.

After the Visit

What should I do about the rest of my home’s security?
Ask me to check your other doors and locks. Afterwards, I’ll point out the weak points, and you decide what to upgrade.

How do I avoid being targeted again?
Replace worn or forced locks, fit anti-snap cylinders, and make sure every door closes and locks smoothly. Together, these small upgrades make a real difference.

They smashed a window to get in. Can you secure that too?
Broken glass needs a glazier. However, I can secure your doors and locks, and I can check your window locks and handles.

Do you attend break-ins in Windsor, Slough and Woking?
Yes. See the areas below. Moreover, I provide the same service across my whole area, with no extra travel charge.

Do you cover the villages between the main towns?
Yes. If you’re in or near my service area, call me, and I’ll confirm.
